WHY CLOSING 3 SWIMMING POOLS AND BUILDING ONLY 1 TO REPLACE THEM JUST DOESN'T ADD UP!

WHY CLOSING 3 SWIMMING POOLS AND BUILDING ONLY 1 TO REPLACE THEM JUST DOESN'T ADD UP!
All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.
In particular, pupils should be taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres; use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke] and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
Below is the list of all Primary Schools in Ashton, Audenshaw, Dukinfield and Denton. Remember. Each school has more than one class of pupils.
Ashton-under-Lyne
Ashton West End Primary School & Early Years Centre; Broadoak Primary School; Canon Burrows Church of England Primary School; Canon Johnson Church of England Primary School; Holden Clough Community Primary School; Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School; Hurst Knoll Primary & Nursery School; Inspire Academy; Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School, Parochial Church of England Primary School; Rosehill Methodist Community Primary School; St Christopher's Roman Catholic Primary & Nursery School; St James' Church of England Primary School; St Peter's Church of England Primary School; The Heys Primary School; Waterloo Primary School
Audenshaw
Aldwyn Primary School; Audenshaw Primary; Poplar Street Primary School; St Anne's Roman Catholic Primary & Nursery School; St Stephen's Church of England Primary School
Denton
Corrie Primary and Nursery School; Dane Bank Primary and Nursery School; Greswell Primary and Nursery School; Linden Road Primary School and Hearing Impaired Base; Manor Green Primary & Nursery School; Russell Scott Primary School; St Anne's Primary School; St John Fisher Roman Catholic Primary School; St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary & Nursery School, Denton; Denton West End Primary School
Dukinfield
Broadbent Fold Primary School and Nursery; Ravensfield Primary School; Lyndhurst Community Primary School; St John's Church of England Primary School; St Mary's Catholic School, Dukinfield; Yew Tree Community Primary School
This, of course, does not include all the Little Ducklings and toddler groups within the areas currently served by the Ashton, Dukinfield & Denton pools - as well as all the swimming clubs who will soon all have to use a single pool.
If all three swimming pools in Ashton, Dukinfield and Denton close and one state of the art swimming pool is built in Tameside to replace them, then how will Tameside Council accomodate all these schools and clubs with the necessary swimming lessons?
Please sign my petition: NO SWIMMING POOL CLOSURES IN TAMESIDE.

  1. Not to forget the children of Hyde! Which leaves Copley, (where I was told that the 'powers that be, ordered the heating to be reduced to save money, which had the effect of many members leaving the Senior Citizens Therapeutic sessions!

Hyde Pool is a splash-about /fun/ play pool and I'd defy anyone to be taught to swim in there!

So, why when the council borrowed £300million+ to build 'schools for the future' did they not build schools with integral pools?

    Where was Tameside's 'vision' there?

One can only hope that if and when they build this so call state of the art super pool, they design it to full competition standard (50metres) with high diving facilities which will make it attractive for many clubs and athletes' from within and outside our area!?

But, (Please excuse the pun) don't hold your breath

  2. Thanks for launching this petition, which I have just signed. As I understand it, the intention is to build a competition standard super pool, aspiring to make it a home for top athletes. However, there is a real tension here, for most swimming pool activity is best done locally. Children need to learn to swim – usually involving many sessions and lots of practice. People who want to swim to keep fit (of all ages) want regular opportunities without having to travel a long way. Having a competition pool sounds attractive – until we realise that much of the time will be reserved for competitive swimming.
Tameside are too fond of closing community facilities with promises of major expenditures to keep us happy. But swimming pools are best when they are local, not centralised. If the Council wants a big pool in Ashton, then it should seek financial sponsors who will make it a success. Council tax money should be spent maintaining and improving local facilities.
