In February 2014, when responding to figures released by Public Health England claiming that more than two thirds of Tamesiders are now overweight or obese, Andrew Gwynne MP and Shadow Minister for Health stated that:
".....we need to open our minds to new approaches in tackling obesity. Helping parents in places like Tameside to protect and promote the future health of our children is exactly what we need to be doing."
".....we need to open our minds to new approaches in tackling obesity. Helping parents in places like Tameside to protect and promote the future health of our children is exactly what we need to be doing."
A year and a half later and - throughout the School Holiday Period - Free Swimming is available to anyone under 17 in Manchester, whilst there has been nothing similar offered to young people living in Tameside!
How sad that such a great opportunity both to promote Health and Well-being and to encourage the development of exercise and lifestyle change amongst the young people in Tameside has been missed!
Meanwhile, whilst encouraging young people in Tameside to develop healthier eating and more exercise, there seems to be very little concern about vending machines in Tameside Leisure Centres, which contain some very unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks!
Surely, many of the products currently offered in these machines in Leisure Centres only serves both to undermine exercise and to send out the wrong message, not only to our young people, but to people of all ages who are being encouraged to adopt a healthier life?
