Labour win most of the wards in Tameside in 2015 - but even had they lost in every single ward, they would still be in control of the Council. So how is that supposed to be democracy? |
In his latest letter to the Tameside Reporter (4th June), Councillor John Taylor said that, in regard to the recent Local Elections:
"The Green Party managed to give residents an opportunity to vote Green if that was their choice in every ward."
How unfortunate then, that even if they had won in every ward, the Green Party would not have won control of Tameside Council - EVEN IF THAT WAS THE CHOICE OF THE RESIDENTS IN EVERY WARD!
I am increasingly sickened and frustrated by the anti-democratic, one-party state mentality of the Deputy Leader and his colleagues, which is mirrored in so many other local authorities across the country.
It is not surprising that so many people choose not to vote - when so many realise that their vote will count for nothing.
It is truly surprising that, in the early 21st century, we have a system of electing councillors by thirds which guarantees continued Labour control of the council - even if Labour were to lose a Local Election.
This is more worthy of a totalitarian, fascist regime than a supposed democratic party - and perhaps instead of gloating over the supposed "success" of Labour in Tameside - Councillor Taylor and his colleagues should be hanging their heads in shame!

One only need to read the opening paragraph of the councillors ghost written letters to conclude that John Taylor along with that other intellectual titan Kieran Quinn, frankly wouldn’t surprise me if they needed help to tie their own shoelaces.
ReplyDeleteThe system needs to be changed!
